By Jean Sicart, President of the Société du Pays Fertois. La Ferté-Bernard was founded as a fortress in the heart of a marsh in the early 11th century, during a troubled and dangerous medieval period. It established itself as a frontier seigneury and later as a town from the 14th century onwards. At that time, it demonstrated its military, commercial and urban dynamism, building its most impressive monuments, its covered market and its Notre-Dame-des-Marais church. It lived through the centuries that followed, sometimes at the heart of history. Since 1945, our "Little Venice of the West" has flourished once again through both urban and economic development, transforming its landscape but always demonstrating the dynamism that characterises it.
